6/11/2008 - Western Carolina University’s Outdoor Summer Fun Series kicks off Thursday, July 10, with “Whitewater Rafting” and continues throughout the month with a series of entertaining and educational outdoor adventures.
The beginner-level rafting course will introduce participants to paddling on the class II-III rapids of the Nantahala River. The course will cover safety, steering techniques and teamwork. Each boat will be fully guided and participants should be a minimum age of 8 or 60 pounds in weight. Cost of the class is $55.
On Thursday, July 17, the series will continue with “Hike with a Botanist.” Participants will spend the day hiking with a WCU botany expert, learning about plant identification and the secrets of the Appalachian ecosystem. Cost of the course is $55.
“River Canoe Trip,” an introductory course that features a float trip on a slow-moving section of a local river, will take place Thursday, July 24. Students will learn the basics such as proper paddling techniques, maneuvering the boat, and reading the river. Cost of the class is $55.
“Introduction to Rock Climbing” will be offered Friday and Saturday, July 25-26. The course will cover the basics of rock climbing, including information about harnesses, basic knots, and rope safety systems while students climb the indoor wall at WCU. Participants also will visit a local outdoor rock climbing site to experience climbing techniques and practice rope systems. No prior experience is necessary. Participants must be at least 16 years of age and in moderately good physical condition. A hike of up to 1.5 miles may be included. Cost of the class is $75.
The series will conclude with “Outdoor Photography” on Thursday, July 31. This course will introduce participants to the unique challenges of outdoor photography, from digital point-and-shoot cameras to professional film cameras. Students will learn about the use of natural light, composition, focus, and camera modes that produce the best results. Participants also will practice taking photos such as panoramic views, insect and flower close-ups and outdoor recreation action shots, and learn about difficult lighting situations.
