Requirements for the “add-on” license in School Administration Leading to licensure in North Carolina for the Principal License

Admission

The program leading to the “add-on” license in School Administration for the Principalship in North Carolina requires the following:

  1. A master’s degree in related area of education from a regionally accredited institution
  2. A current teaching license and three years of P-12 teaching experience
  3. Admission to the Graduate School at Western Carolina University
  4. Have completed the following courses in the existing master’s degree (or complete them in addition to the add-on license requirements):
  • Graduate research course
  • Graduate curriculum course
  • Graduate course in psychology or human growth and development
  • Graduate course in foundations, philosophy and/or history of education
  • Requirements

    To receive recommendation for the add-on license, students will satisfactorily complete 24 hours [18 hours must be completed at WCU] as defined below and meet the outlined requirements:

    • Three internships (EDL 685, 686 (2hour), and 687) for a total of six hours
    • The two and three hours of internship must be completed during two separate semesters (generally completed in school where individual works)
    • Portfolio activities in each course which address the Leadership standards
    • Submission of a portfolio (required to be electronically submitted by those entering in Fall of 2006 or after)
    • Satisfactory score (as defined by NC State Board of Education) on the School Leadership Licensure Exam

    All courses, except the internships are available on-line. EDL 685 must be completed in Cullowhee, NC offered over two full-days (Friday/Saturday). Remaining internship hours are generally completed in school where student works (other arrangements can be made.)
