The Dobyns-Bennett band was judged as best among 22 of the Southeast’s top high school marching bands that took part in the seventh annual competition. Second place went to Clover High School of Clover, S.C., while White Knoll High School from Lexington, S.C., took third place in the finals competition.
Tuscola High School of Waynesville won the first ever North Old North State Roll of Honour, which is awarded to the highest scoring band from North Carolina.
Bands were divided into three classifications based on the number of wind musicians and were judged in a variety of categories – including best auxiliary, best percussion and best drum major – during the morning preliminary competition. The champion from each classification, plus the seven highest-scoring bands not represented as class champion, comprised the night-time finals session.
During the morning preliminaries, AAA division awards went to Dobyns-Bennett for best auxiliary, best percussion and best drum major. Dobyns-Bennett was the champion from its class.
The AA division awards went to Tuscola of Waynesville for best auxiliary and best percussion, and Clover for best drum major. Clover was named champion from its class.
Division awards from the A classification went to Brevard High School for best auxiliary, Owen High School of Black Mountain for best percussion, and Robbinsville High School for best drum major. Pisgah High School of Canton was the champion from the A class.
The evening finals consisted of 10 bands vying for the title of grand champion. Other bands that advanced to the evening competition were Bassett High School, Bassett, Va.; Colleton County High School, Walterboro, S.C.; Dutch Fork High School, Irmo, S.C.; Tuscola High School, Waynesville; North Buncombe High School, Weaverville; and North Lincoln High School.
The competition involved high school musicians from Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia, and North and South Carolina. All sessions were held at E.J. Whitmire Stadium on Western’s campus.
