Biographical Note
George Washington Carver (1864-1943) was a noted African-American educator and agricultural scientist who was associated with Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) in Macon County, Alabama for most of his career. The Slagle family resided in Jackson County, North Carolina at the time of their correspondence with Carver.
Content and Scope
Twenty-five (25) pieces of correspondence from George Washington Carver to Mrs. Jesse Henry (Margaret Gillispie) Slagle and Dr. Thomas Dickey (Dick) Slagle, dating from 1924-1936. Also, twenty-two (22) mail envelopes accompanying the correspondence; a letter concerning the Slagle family and Rev. Deal; clippings; and three (3) pamphlets printed in 1924 ("Studies with Phytosterols," "Experiment Station Record," "Some Natural Violet Hybrids of North America").
