The collection contains 45 letters written by George Job Huntley during his service in the Confederate army.  Huntley was born in Rutherford County, North Carolina, in 1841.  He enlisted in Company I of the 34th N.C. Regiment in 1861.  Over the next two years he served in Virginia and North Carolina.  Huntley corresponded with friends and family.  His first letter was dated November 22, 1861, and the final letter was dated June 29, 1863; there are no letters for the period between August 15, 1862, and March 18, 1863.  Huntley was wounded on the first day of battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and died the next day (July 2, 1863).

The letters of George Job Huntley have been published in the book, The Cry is War, War, War, edited and annotated by Michael W. Taylor (Dayton, Ohio:  Morningside, 1994).
